East Ravenswood Historic District

The East Ravenswood Historic District was added to the National Park Service National Registry of Historic Places in 1991.

The district is located to the west of Graceland Cemetery – encompassing Hermitage and Paulina from Irving Park Road (4000N)to Lawrence Avenue (4800N), as well as the “Graceland West” neighborhood, which straddles Lakeview and Uptown neighborhoods.

This area is known for large lots- many 37.5 or 50’ wide. The properties on Hermitage and Paulina can be 183’ deep, as Marshfield St doesn’t exist north of Irving Park. Unlike other districts, several homes have been torn down to build newer properties, so the neighborhood is a mix of both old and new. Architectural styles range from Victorian and Queen Anne to Prairie School and revival styles form the 20th centuries.

There are many lovely churches, representing a variety of religious denominations. The neighborhood is interesting, not only to historic home afficianados, but to families whose children attend the nearby Lycee Francais and German International School Chicago.

Searching for homes in this area takes special effort – it’s better to search via maps and by coordinates rather than only by neighborhood, since this historic district is located in 3 Chicago communities- Lake View, Uptown, and Lincoln Square.
